BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Magistrate's Court adjourned a case of infanticide after receiving information from the prosecution that assessment on the Indonesian defendant is still in process and that DNA samples are still being analysed.

Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman fixed the case for further mention on September 7, 2016 while the defendant further remanded.

Desi Thania, 19, is alleged to have caused the death of her newborn baby girl by throwing the infant into the Brunei River from the toilet window of a house at Kampong Sungai Besar at 3am on August 7, 2016.

The defendant was said to have been in a disturbed state of mind while doing this, not having fully recovered from the effectsof childbirth. She was arrested at 5pm on August 8, 2016 by CID officers from the Women and Children Abuse Investigation Unit.

DPP Zuraidah Sidek represented the Public Prosecutor in the case.

The charge against the defendant carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine.
