Brunei Athletes and Officials Return Home From Rio

Eight members of Brunei Darussalam contingent consisting of Chef de Mission, three athletes, a manager, two coaches and a secretariat officer returned home after participating in the Olympic Games 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
On hand to welcome the contingent at the Brunei International Airport was Yang Behormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Also present were Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth andSports (MCYS) as well as senior officials of the ministry and the Department of Youth and Sports.
The national contingent was led by Umi Kalthum binti Haji Abdul Karim, Chef de Mission.
Brunei participated under quota of Universality Places that has been awarded by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) through the International Olympic Council (IOC) for 2 athletes: Mohd Fakhri bin Ismail and Maizurah binti Abdul Rahim. They are recipients of scholarships for training athletes of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through the Olympic Solidarity Fund for the Olympic Scholarship Program for Athletes Rio 2016.
Universality Places quota was granted to the National Olympic Council of Brunei Darussalam who do not have athletes who qualified through the qualification process for the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile our national badminton player Jasper Yu Woon Chai participated at the invitation of the Tripartite Commission Invitation Places of quotas granted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) through the International Olympic Committee (IOC) based on the ranking of players point for the Asia zone.
Mohd Fakhri competed in the 100m while Maizurah ran in the 200m, while Jasper participated in the badminton men's singles.
