The media today were invited to an interview session with YSEALI US fellow Patrick Hare from Oregon, where he shared his thoughts and what he hopes to bring back to US. Also present was Host Jeffery Ang, one of the three YSEALI Brunei fellows who visited the US.
In the interview Hare shared on what he can bring back to US and he pointed three things he hopes to bring back to the US. Firstly, Hare pointed of Brunei’s strength is its ‘unique culture and the close connection’ between the Sultan and his people which he finds ‘impressive’ and found it inspiring that he hope to do the same with his home community.
What Hare also hopes to take back to the US is ‘maintenance’ in terms of having funds to maintain Tourist sites and buildings, he discussed that there are similarities between Oregon and Brunei where ‘funds need to be put away…looking into maintenance of projects and having them in the budget for building them’.
Lastly, ‘Protecting resources’ is another point Hare made, he believes in forest conservation and how to tap into utilizing it ‘we need to maintain it instead of allowing development’ to avoid land use loss through development.
Moreover, Hare also added he wish to become an advocate for Bruneians obtaining a scholarship to the University of Oregon and thanked the YSEALI program, ICMA and the US embassy for a once in a life time opportunity visit Brunei.
