BDYA to Send 5 Participants for Merdeka Day Open Regatta in Kota Kinabalu

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Brunei Darussalam Yachting Association (BDYA) will be sending five vvindsurfers to participate in the Malaysian national ranking regatta event, KFC/NSC 23rd Merdeka Day Open Regatta 2016 from August 26 - 28 at the Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu.

"The objective of our participation in local and regional events is for us to represent Brunei and we hope that one day we can compete on the Olympic level. The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has approved and received our membership submission and (we are) waiting for their official announcement after their coming annual general meeting this November."

"With the ISAF recognition it will be a strong indication as a whole that Brunei has achieved another development in yachting sports," said BDYA President Dato Paduka Ar Haji Idris bin Haji Abas.

BDYA windsurfers recently came in first in Race Board and second in Phantom Class in the Harvest Race 2016, held last May in Kota Kinabalu. BDYA was recognised by the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) since last year, and recently by the Asian Sailing Federation (ASAF) early this year.

The windsurfers will be competing in the Windsurf Open and Starboard Phantom 295. BDYA will not be sending their strong laser and optimist sailors as charter boats prepared by the organiser are boats and boom only without sails and rigging.

With support of the Youth and Sports Department, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, BDYA plans on sending their sailors to various upcoming Asian events (ASAF Youth sailing and Optimist in Singapore, UAE, Thailand) and the 29th SEA Games in Langkawi next year.
