People reacted with sadness and anger when Cecil the lion was slaughtered last year – and in the same way when Harambe was shot dead three months ago.

Cecil’s death, at the hands of US dentist Walter Palmer, sparked a global outcry and raised uncomfortable questions about the ethics of hunting.

Harambe’s passing couldn’t have been more different – he was in captivity at Cincinnati Zoo but was shot by a zookeeper when a little boy got into his enclosure.

There were campaigns and petitions in the weeks after Cecil’s death, but Harambe is now remembered through jokes and memes across the internet.

One thing that the pair do have in common is they live on in a special place in our hearts.
