BEIJING

China saw steady growth in its renewable energy capacity in the first five months of 2021, data from the National Energy Administration shows.

As of the end of May, the country's installed energy capacity totals 2.24 billion kilowatts, according to the data.

Wind farms saw their capacity hit 290 million kilowatts, up 34.4 percent year on year, while solar capacity grew 24.7 percent to 260 million kilowatts.

China is forging ahead in renewable energy development amid its transition to a low-carbon economy.

The country has announced that it will strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
