BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
Muslims in the country were advised to distance themselves from the latest virtual reality game Pokemon Go and avoid organising or taking part in a gathering to play the game in public places which may jeopardise safety of the people and cause accidents and overcrowding, Imams said yesterday.
The same applies to home or anywhere where it could cause undesirable incidents and affect the harmony and maslahah (public interest) in the country, they said in the Friday sermon, hoping that people would take a positive approach in controlling their obsession to avoid untoward incidents and ensure safety of all.
The religious authorities said in the transition to the era of information and technology, we should not easily be influenced by negative developments but be cautious when doing something. It should be based on Islamic teachings.
"We should see the game in various angles - including religion, community, industry, social and humanity. Be aware that you are potentially sharing data with others; there could be potential criminals who may seek the opportunity to lure victims as garners would expose their location to other players and take advantage of it.
"Cyber criminals can access your personal data to commit fraud or hack into your phone with viruses and malware while trespassers would enter private properties increasing the possibility of thefts.
"Players would also be enticed to play at restricted areas like fuel filling stations, power stations, army bases and expose national security to outsiders."
Imams also advised Muslims not to play the reality game at mosques and turn the place of worship as a place to gather to play the game.
"It affects the sanctity of such place. Muslims in the country should correct their intention when entering mosques, suraus and religious halls which is to carry out prayers, recitations and so on to seek blessings and forgiveness from Allah the Almighty, and not to get carried away by worldly affairs by playing Pokemon Go which can bring harm.
"We should be careful and safeguard ourselves, our children and family from such harm," Imams said.
