SR Lambak Kanan Won DST's National Chess Championship

The Lambak Kanan Primary School (SR Lambak Kanan) emerged as the best school in the DST National Age Group Chess Championship that was held yesterday in conjunction with the 70th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni AlMarhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School.

 

International School Brunei (ISB) finished in second place, while the Chung Hwa Middle School, Kuala Belait, came in third.

 

The event's guest of honour and Director General of Education at the Ministry of Education, Awang Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, who presented the winners with their prizes.

 

For the individual categories, Md Zekree Leong bin Zainurin emerged as the winner for the Under-20 category, while Kamarul Ariffin bin Haji Kifli won the Under-16. Both accumulated eight-and-ahalf tournament points.

 

Meanwhile, Syasya Badrina binti Awang Badarudin was named best girl in the Under-16 and Under-20 tournaments, coming in 22nd overall

 

Abdul Zahirul Haq bin Zazali won the Under-12 category and Kyla Marie Q Vallesfin emerged as best girl.

 

The tournament, which attracted a total of 90 players from 18 schools, bodes well with the Brunei Chess Federation's (BCE) aim of accelerating the development of chess in the country.

 

A number of chess players have been identified to represent the Sultanate in the Baku Chess Olympiad slated for September 1 with approximately 3,000 players from more than 150 countries expected for the event.
