RIO DE JANEIRO
Brunei Darussalam's Mohd Fakhri bin Ismail cemented history after qualifying for Round 1 as the eighth fastest qualifier from the preliminaries with a time of 10.92s before eventually finishing in 9th place in his heats with a time of 10.95s at the Olympic Stadium yesterday.
The Bruneian runner, who has gone further than any Bruneian at this stage at the Olympics, also finished 68th overall with the usual suspects warmed up to the prospect of Olympic glory.
The national sprinter has made a promising start having briefly led the field on the 30m mark before he was overtaken in the final few metres by Palau's Rodman Teltull who won the heat with a time of 10.53s and Singapore's Jin Wei Timothee Yap who posted 10.84s.
However, Round 1 proved a step too far for the athlete who despite elimination has now qualified to the next phase in every single major competition he joined in including the SEA Games and the World Championships.
Bahrain's Kemarley Brown sealed first place in Mohd Fakhri's heats with a time of 10.13s together with Great Britain's Chijindu Ujah who clocked the same time.
The sprinter has not been able to better his national record of 10.59s but still accomplished the first hurdle of the 100m competition.
The three heavyweights of the sport, Jamaican pair of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake and American Justin Gaitlin won their Round 1 heats comfortably.
But it was the American that stamped his authority in Round 1 after recording a time of 10.01s to lead the overall classification with Ivory Coast's Ben Youssef Meite and Canada's Andre De Grasse proving their worth in second and third places, respectively.
Usain Bolt, hoping to clinch a third treble of 100m, 200m and 400m, finished in a temporary fourth place with his compatriot Yohan Blake also in the running for a podium finish.
Macedonia's Riste Pandev kicked off the first 100m heats with a winning time of 10.72s followed by Indonesia's Sudirman Hadi with a time of 10.77s and Palestine's Mohammed Abukhousa with a time of 10.82s.
Hassan Saaid qualified the fastest in the preliminaries after recording a time of 10.43s and was joined by Tonga's Siueni Filimone who placed second in his heats with a time of 10.76s.
