Brunei Sprinters Hopeful of Achieving Good Time in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO

 

Brunei Darussalam males printer Mohd Fakhri Ismail underlined his ambition to record a good timing and do his country proud in the 100m preliminaries at the Rio Olympics tonight at the Olympic Stadium.

 

"I am ready and excited to compete and hopefully I can get a good timing," Mohd Fakhri told the Media.

 

The national record holder currently boasts a time of 10.59 seconds which he registered during his appearance in the SEA Games and which also earned him a place in the final.

 

Mohd Fakhri has already silently hoped to revise his national record time for a record third time with a new mark of 10.4s or better having accomplished the feat twice last year.

 

The sprinter has also bumped into international stars in the track and field community during training including Jamaica's world record holder Usain Bolt, Great Britain's Olympic and world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill and American's Olympic and world decathlon champion Ashton Eaton.

 

Maizurah Abdul Rahim, the youngest of the three athletes with shuttler Jaspar Yu Woon Chai set to become the first badminton player to represent Brunei at the Olympics, could not contain her excitement of representing her country in the 200m event.

 

The Belait lass has stepped in an incredible journey since taking by storm in the national competitions and she has every reason to be excited about her Olympic debut considering that the country will be rooting for her.

 

"I could not believe my luck when I was selected. I cannot believe it," the 17-year old said from her training base.

 

"This is a valuable experience in my life and also for my colleagues in Kuala Belait," she said.

 

The sprinter will be looking to smash her personal best of 27.85s in undoubtedly the biggest multi-sporting competition in the world.

 

Maizurah could even aim for loftier heights if she gets close to meeting the national record currently owned by Alinawati Abu Bakar who posted a time of 25.22s in the 2001 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

 

The soon-to-be secondfemale Brunei Olympian enjoyed progress without any stumbling blocks in her training preparations.

 

"Developments in training have been smooth and intensive training has been allocated in accordance to schedule. The final preparations will be decided in August 15," said Maizurah.

 

Maizurah is scheduled to run on August 15 at the Olympic Stadium and shall a positive surprise lies ahead by qualifying to the next phase training will continue.

 

She added the urgency to overcome the mental and physical challenges cometh the hour in her biggest race of her life.

 

"Mental and physical challenges must be dealt with in a serious manner because we are confronting athletes with plenty of experience and what more they are world class athletes who regularly trained," added the junior athlete.

 

Maizurah will compete in the 200m event on Monday while Jaspar Yu will take on Hong Kong's world number 12 Hu Yun in the men's singles today before completing his group stage against Spain's Pablo Abian.
