Carl Montgomery and Udun Osakue, American import players of the Juramas basketball team that participated in the recent Speedspend cup basketball championship, were impressed with the potential and ability of local players.
In an interview with the media on the sidelines of the one-day basketball clinic organised by Shooting Stars and Fitness Zone on Saturday, Udun Osakue said, "There were some very good local players and some even helped their teams more than the imports during our matches, so I think that there is potential in some of the local players."
Osakue advised aspiring basketball players to build on body fitness and strength as well as to watch basketball games to improve on one's game.
"Work hard and never give up. Get in good shape to play man to man and not only zone defence," he added.
Meanwhile, Montgomery also shared his view on local basketball players saying, "The local players were impressive. They were very physical when guarding me. To play a physical game, player's need to commit to conditioning, weight lifting and others."
On the importance of having a coach, Montgomery said, "A proper coach with knowledge of the game can let player know what they are doing wrong as there is no perfect basketball player."
Both men attribute their success in basketball to their coaches, family and friends who are also there to remind the players to be humble to accept criticism.
On their defeat during the recent semifinal match against D'Sunlit, Montgomery said "It's a bitter defeat and I can still taste it. I am really thinking of come back again next year for revenge."
Montgomery hopes to see more imports playing in next year's tournament.
