New Miri Mayor Adam Yii has pledged that the Miri City Council’s (MCC) service delivery would not be bogged down by “chronic bureaucratic red tape”.

During the swearing-in ceremony for MCC on Friday, Yii said, “New ways of ensuring service delivery will have to be formulated in consultation with my councillors and MCC’s administration.

“I know the limitations of the present system that often considers procedures are more important than results. However, time and people’s expectations have changed. So we need to harmonise the procedures to ensure our ultimate objective of quality service delivery is met.”

Yii said he realised the heavy responsibility on his shoulders as the city’s third mayor.

“There is a huge expectation and pressure from the people of Miri to see better service delivery by the council and to provide the proper leadership in further developing Miri to a higher level.

“However, I am optimistic about the future of Miri. My optimism is based on the fact that two-thirds of the present batch of councillors are new faces and are relatively young. I believe they will come with new ideas and will be more open-minded,” he said.

Yii said major issues of public concern should be dealt with in a holistic manner such as chronic traffic jams in many areas, indiscriminate parking, rising rubbish and pollution woes, security and safety concerns, squatters, and increased animal cruelty.

“It is among my key objectives to ensure Miri Resort City will further develop its tourism potentials. Kota Kinabalu can be our model. And it’s my hope that Miri Resort City will one day soon be as vibrant and dynamic as Kota Kinabalu, if not better,” he added.

Meanwhile, the proposed new city hall project will be tabled for discussion during the next cabinet meeting.

Minister of Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian pledged to help push for the project to be realised.

“My ministry will try the best to support you because this is what you deserve to have,” he said.

Dr Sim said Miri would continue to develop and prosper with better infrastructure and facilities including a centralised sewerage system.

He urged the people to help ensure Miri becomes the most liveable city in the state by 2030.

On the mix of new and reappointed councillors, Dr Sim said the group would benefit from their varied backgrounds and experiences; urging them to work as a team for the betterment of Miri.
