Islam encourages its Ummah to live in moderation. This includes moderation in the intake of food and drinks. Excessive eating and drinking can jeopardise health. If it is not controlled, it can cause various diseases such as high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes. This is also not in line with the teachings of Islam, which places health at the highest position after faith. The Practise of Healthy Diet is the Responsibility of All was the topic of yesterday's Friday Sermon.
The imam or prayer leader said that recently we have heard the 2012 diet report that placed Brunei Darussalam that has placed the country as one that has the highest level of obesity among adults in the Asian region. In this regard, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in his titah in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri recently mentioned how the obesity statistics in the country is disturbing and should not be taken for granted unless the people discipline themselves as of now to overcome this problem from continuing to rise.
Among the ways of maintaining health that should be practised such as by carrying out active programmes at least 30 minutes a day such as exercising, cleaning the house compound and such, regularly drinking plain water at least eight glasses a day, for hot drinks such as tea or coffee, reduce the sugar added into the drinks and to replace condensed milk with low fat milk in drinks. They should also make a practise of eating fruits and vegetables and to prioritise cooking food without using coconut milk or cooking with minimum amount of oil.
