Fisheries Dept' Conducted In-House Course on Organoleptic Tests

The Fisheries Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, recently conducted an in-house course on organoleptic tests of of fish/shellfish to the Department Officers on July 25-28.

 

The objective of this course is to enhance the officers' skill in implementing hygiene practice programme on ships focusing on quality check on caught fish based on organoleptic tests.

 

This approach coincide with the Fisheries Department role as 'Competent Authority' in implementing quality on 'food chain' as an overall from the main production for processing and distribution.

 

Practical course were also given where participants are taught on procedures for visual inspection for histamine and parasite as well as heavy metals to be analyse in the lab, to evaluate the damage and quality of fish, as well as inspecting and recording fish temperature and to accurately identify fish that are poisonous.

 

Hence, results from the examination are one of the necessities wanted by Europe for fisheries product marketing in European Union countries.

 

With the in-house training, this will further reinforce the capacity of the officers in carrying out quality inspection on fishes caught so that entreprenuers will be more alert on cleanliness before, during and after the operations as well as maintaining the food safety for all consumers either for export or import.

 

The sanity requirement is aimed to ensure the product achieve high quality and to avoid any product pollution during the process.

 

The Fisheries Department had produce guidelines on which contains informations and guidance to meet the sanitary requirements on the supply chain of fisheris product.

 

The in house course training was conducted by a teaching staff from Malaysia, Nazri Ishak, Head of the Fish Biosecurity in Sarawak.

 

The course was held for four days which was attended by 20 officers from the Fisheries Department where the closing ceremony presentation was attended by the guest of honour, Awang Haji Abdul Halidi bin Mohd Salleh, Acting Director of Fisheries.
