Bandar Seri Begawan: Brunei Darussalam's sepak takraw team ranked seventh in the world has left for New Delhi, India to compete in the Super Series World Cup from Aug 28 to Sept 2.
The Brunei takraw team led by national sepak takraw coach Ittiphol has been in preparation since six months ago.
The team comprised of three new players and two experienced players. They are Mohammad Shufri bin Jaineh, Humaidi Brahim, Abdul Hadi Ariffin bin Matali, Marzuki Munap and Ahmad Habbibuddin.
Two Brunei referees who are accredited with international sepak takraw referee accolade, Ramlan bin Hj Mohd Said and Hj Zaman bin Hj Samat will be technical officials of the tournament. The manager of the team is Abu Bakar bin Hj Jumat.
A total of 12 countries will be competing in the World Super Series and among them are hot favourites Thailand, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, Brunei, India, USA, Iran, China and Japan.
Last year, Brunei managed to collect enough points to be ranked seventh and are hoping to climb up the rankings this year.
National sepak takraw coach Ittiphol said: "The placement of the teams in the groupings is crucial. I hope that the team is put in a good draw at the group stage."
Brunei will only take part in the Inter-Regu event during the competition.
Prior to departure, Pg Hj Ali Hassan Pg DSLJ Hj Abas, the President of the Brunei Darussalam Sepal< Takraw Association was at the airport to hand over the national flag to the team and wished them good luck.
