Hanoi, Vietnam - Brunei Darussalam's strong contingent of 51 athletes and 28 officials were among teams at the opening ceremony of the 5th Asean School Games (ASG) over the weekend at the Hanoi Athletics Palace, Vietnam.
The opening performances showcased the national identity of the respective nations. The main performances also showcased the chivalry, hospitability, youthful and friendly collaboration of thousands of students in Hanoi to other students from countries participating in the event.
Vice Minister of Education and Training, Tran Quang Guy said that the 5th ASG was an opportunity for students, officials and teachers from different countries in the region to have favorable conditions to exchange views, culture, experience and learn together to enhance physical education quality and school sport level, step by step catch up with sport level of students in Asian countries and in the world.
Brunei Darussalam chef-de-mission, Acting Director of Co-curriculum, Pg Suhaimi bin Pg Hj Bakar said Brunei will be taking part in five out of the nine sports being contested - track and field, swimming, pencak silat, table tennis and badminton.
"We have a few talented athletes in our camp and although we hope for a medal in the games, it is the aspiration of the Asean School Games that the friendship and bonds that had been fostered throughout the games will last a life time," Pg Suhaimi said.
He stated that based on the honoured tradition of the ASG that they continue to hold dear, winning the games has always been subordinate to the more noble and higher goal of promoting solidarity and camaraderie among the participants.
"That being said where we are assured of the deeper meaning and importance that we attach to the Aswean school games even as we appreciate the role that it plays in broadening the base of cooperation among the schools and education ministry in Asean," he concluded.
Sharing his sentiment, special invited guest to the event (VVIP) Brunei Darussalam's Acting Director General of Schools, Hj Kassim bin Hj Md Yusof, said that although the aim of the sports meet among Asean schools to forge a stronger bond of friendship and cooperation between respective authorities it is still a competition, albeit a friendly one.
"The 5th Asean School Games is an important spot for the student community to interact with each other, strengthening the existing friendship among countries and making new ones. Nonetheless, the sports meet in various ways will promote all participants to set aspiration and aims, above and beyond the importance of self-discipline, strength of mind and team work," he said.
Also present was Acting Principal for Sports Schools, Pg Hj Zahari bin Pg Hj Ahmad, who had briefly stated that although other teams are strong, we might still spring a few surprises in particular the teams, which have trained very hard for the event.
