Bandar Seri Begawan:The closing ceremony of the 'Conference on Sports and Exercise Science and Physical Education - The Importance of Grassroots Development in Sports Through Education' was held yesterday at the Lecture Theatre at the Sports School in Kg Pulaie. The event was organised by the Sports School in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the formation of the Sports School.
In attendance as the guest of honour to present the certificates to the eight speakers was Pg Hjh Sarah binti Pg Hj Kamaluddin, Director-General of Education at the Ministry of Education.
The keynote speaker Goby Nair from Singapore who is also the Director-General of SEA Regional Anti-Doping Organisation, in his presentation entitled 'Development and Implementation of a Sports Science Education Curriculum in Grassroots Development in Sports', yesterday highlighted that the aims of grassroots sports is to promote a physically active population, to promote sports participation and to provide a base for talent identification and recruitment.
It is also to encourage a healthy lifestyle, to promote a social-psychological well-being end promotion of values as well as to provide platform to build cohesiveness between society and economic benefits.
Goby Nair also said that regardless of the aims of the grassroots sports programmes, there will be a need to empower participants with knowledge that will contribute to his/her understanding to achieve long term objectives for life.
Participants of the conference comprised of coaches, teachers, students and athletes.
There were eight seminars with different topics presented during the programme - Seminar 1: Injury Prevention in Young Athletes by Yvette Korteka, Seminar 2: The role of Majlis Sukan ABDB in RBAF by Major Sopian bin Haji Mohammad Yassin, Seminar 3: Innovating through Blood, Sweat and Tears in Football Development: The Experience of Project Ikan Pusu by Cheah Swee Ming, Seminar 4: Grassroots Development in Sports by Eric Landa, Seminar 5: Warm-up: A Gateway to Fundamental Movement Skill Development by Mohammad Ali-Rashid bin Hj Mohammad Alipah, Seminar 6: Keberkesanan Kursus Asas Renang bagi Guru-Guru Pendidikan Jasmani by Haji Mohannad Azwan bin Haji Awang Besar, Seminar 7 : Psychological Benefits of Sports Participation (Preadolescence & Adolescence) by Zulkiflee bin Abdul Hamid and Seminar 8: Student's Attitude Towards Physical Education by Hajah Masriatol binti Hj Sajali.
Also present at the event was Pg Zahari bin Pg Hj Ahmad, the Principal of the Sports School who is also the chairperson of the event.
