Bandar Seri Begawan: Birthday gifts or 'pesambah' for His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam poured in as the monarch mingled with his subjects for the final get-together ceremony in the heart of the capital yesterday.
The Brunei-Muara District get-together allowed thousands of well-wishers a chance to personally greet His Majesty, and also saw the monarch receiving numerous 'pesambah' that came in various shapes, designs and forms - some of which were even edible.
The Tiong Hua community in the Brunei-Muara District presented His Majesty with a 50-pound cake which was decorated with 12-peach frosting on top of the icing symbolically means everlasting age for His Majesty and the number 12 represented the months in the lunar calendar.
The Tiong Hwa community also presented His Majesty with a sliver with a shade of purple head-woven Iongsaraf Made in Brunei.
The Indian Chamber of Commerce and the Indian community in Brunei-Muara District shared the same sentiment as the record holders presented His Majesty with a giant 67-kilogramme cake. The massive six-by-five-foot cake was prepared by Royal Brunei Catering and took three days to complete.
These giant cakes were later distributed to those who came to the event.
One of the more artistic pesambah was from an individual, Lim Thian Lee and family from Kampong Bolkiah A. The pesambah came in the form of a wooden horse decorated with jade pearls.
He said: "The pesambah was flown from Malaysia and arrived just in time for His Majesty get-together celebration. I expressed my sincerest gratitude to the ruler on his 67th birthday."
Local shutterbugs also presented His Majesty with their creative talents in depicting various portraits of the ruler in the form of paintings and digital arts of the monarch during the recent field celebration.
Meanwhile, Royal Brunei (RB) Airlines presented His Majesty with a handbook on Musafir - a collaboration between the airlines with the State Mufti Department - together with RB's special perfume, a special scent produced only for His Majesty and praying beads (tasbih) made from Eagle Wood (gaharu).
According to an RB representative, the perfume and praying beads are placed in a specially made crystal case which was also Made in Brunei.
