Jakarta: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Monday questioned Mahfud Suroso, Director of PT Dutasari Citralaras, the construction company most entangled in the Hambalang sports complex fraud in West Java.
"I am responsible for my job. I am a gentleman and professional. I am a mechanic-electrical contractor," Mahfud told reporters on Monday when he was asked who was actually responsible for the massive thefts in project.
Infamous convict, thief and former Democratic Party bigwig Muhammad Nazaruddin alleged that Mahfud pocketed Rp 100 billion (US$10.9 million) from PT Adhi Karya, a state-owned company that won the tender for project, and delivered the money to Yulianis, one of Nazaruddin's cronies.
According to Nazaruddin, the money was brought to the 2010 Democratic Party congress in Bandung to be given to branch executive boards to buy their votes for Anas Urbaningrum's chairmanship. Reports say that Mahfud has a close relationship with Anas.
The KPK has imposed a travel ban on Mahfud Suroso on April this year.
The Hambalang project was initiated by the Youth and Sport Ministry in 2010, with a total budget of Rp 1.5 trillion. (lfr)
