Admittedly, we were pretty mesmerized by Beyoncé's sixties-inspired eyeliner look at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration. But we're also the first to admit that it's a pretty hard look to master. It takes women (namely us) years to get it right. And as annoying as it is to hear that "practice makes perfect," well, we're just going to say it, because it's really the only way. That, and a few useful pointers. With our play-by-play guide, you'll soon be on your way to wielding eyeliner like a pro.
Minute 1: Steady your hand
Nothing screams amateur more than a wonky, uneven eyeliner job (hey, we've all been there). So first thing's first: Remove shakiness from the equation by resting your elbow on a counter or table. Slow and steady wins this race. Next, create a line of small dots along the entire lash line.
Minute 2: Connect the dots
Instead of attempting to make one swift line (which is not that easy), you're going to connect those dots to make what appears to be a very sleek line. Believe us on this one: It's so much easier this way. Once you made your line, you can decide if you want to go back and make it thicker. The line will be much easier to work with once you've built your base.
Minute 3: Create a wing and clean up any mistakes
Should you decide to create a wing, draw an upward-arching line that is a natural extension of your lower lash line. Then create a triangular shape connecting the top and bottom lines. Finally, use a makeup remover-soaked cotton swab Q-tip to fix any smudges.
