Lahad Datu: Police have smashed a motorcycle theft gang known as ‘Geng Gopal' following the arrest of a man, believed to be the head of the group.
The main suspect, 22, was picked up by CID officers during a raid at about 10.30pm in Kampung Jawa on September 7.
Two other persons, aged 22 and 30, believed to be buyers, were also detained on September 11.
Acting district police chief ASP Ang Seow Aun told reporters here yesterday he believed they have solved 25 bike theft and housebreaking cases with the arrest of the suspected gang leader.
He said losses were estimated at RM80,000.
According to him, three other members of the gang had earlier been arrested and charged.
Meanwhile, he said the suspected gang leader was detained when he was about to leave his house on a motorcycle.
"We have been monitoring the area before making the arrest," Ang said, adding that the house was believed to have been used to keep the stolen bikes.
Ang also said the gang had been active in and around the town since early this year.
The case is being probed under Sections 379A and 457 of the Penal Code.
