Bandar Seri Begawan - Officers and staff as well as Penghulus and village heads in the Brunei-Muara District yesterday attended a talk on waste disposal and cleaning management in residential areas held at the Dewan Muhibbah of the Brunei-Muara District Office.

The guest of honour was the Assistant Brunei-Muara District Officer, Awg Hj Abd Hamid Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah as well as members of the Legislative Council of the Brunei-Muara District.

Yesterday's briefing was delivered by an officer from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) who amongst all touched on trash and solid waste disposal at residential areas.

To start raising awareness on the correct way of waste disposal, there is a need to educate and train the public to make and practice the habit of more organised disposal of rubbish particularly separating recycled materials in the proper disposal bin.

JASTRe adopts a multi-prong approach in creating awareness towards environmental conservation, covering the many facets of environmental issues such as solid waste, toxic and hazardous wastes, air quality, water quality, biodiversity and climate change.

The department also continues to propagate and promote the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R programme), in its aim towards reducing the amount of waste generation in Brunei Darussalam.

This is done through an informal education setup through public lectures, talks, seminars, environmental awareness and cleaning campaigns at schools and higher learning institutions, which is primarily targeted at the younger generation and also the public at large.

Such activities aim to change the mindset and enhance the public's knowledge on the importance of safeguarding and conserving our scarce resources, instilling a sense of responsibility and an environmentally friendly lifestyle and encouraging stewardship of environmental initiatives to ensure environmental sustainability.
