Bandar Seri Begawan - The UBD|IBM Centre; Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is organising a three-day workshop on Flood Forecasting at its office at the Knowledge Hub in Anggerek Desa. It is the third of a series of forecasting workshops held since early this year.
The UBD|IBM Flood Forecasting workshop is meant to bring together engineers and researchers to learn certain coupled meteorology-hydrology models and its application using UBD's Super-computing facilities.
Through the workshop, the relevant stakeholders will be able to address and tackle the challenges associated with the planning and developing of strategies for better environmental management particularly those associated with floods.
The workshop, which was facilitated Dr Frank Liu of IBM Research, Austin Texas consisted of lectures and discussions on the hydrology concept, analysis, flood routing and run-off, surface routing, hydrological and hydraulic models, channel flows as well as practical activities using modelling programmes such as the SPRINT model and HEC-RAS.
According to Dr Saiful Azmi Hj Husain, Deputy Director of UBDIIBM Centre, such workshop was also part of their initiative to engage more local stakeholders from relevant ministries to collaborate with the centre's projects as well as to assist the ministries in developing human capacity building.
Participants of the three-day workshop consist of personnel from the Survey Department as well as the Drainage and Sewerage Department. The workshop ends today.
