Bandar Seri Begawan - A Year Four student from Lumapas Primary School is currently receiving treatment at the RIPAS Hospital after falling from a staircase at the school on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) in a press statement yesterday confirmed the incident, news of which had been circulating yesterday morning on social networks and the mobile application, WhatsApp.

According to a report, on the morning of October 17, the student was excused from class after he had asked for permission to use the washroom. Witnesses said the student had lost balance while on the staircase and consequently fell down.

The report added that at that time, it appeared the student suffered injuries to his forehead. The student was rushed to the Sungai Asam Health Clinic, nearby, before being rushed to the RIPAS Hospital to undergo further treatment.

As part of emergency procedure at schools, the parents of the student were duly informed of the incident.

"The school held `sunat hajat' and `doa tolak bala' prayers for the speedy recovery of the student and for the school to be kept away from any mishaps," it added.

The MoE also expressed its grief to the parents of the students, and its deepest sadness and regrets over the incident.

Following the incident, the ministry advises teachers and parents to remind the students about the common safety practices while at school.

The ministry is also seeking public cooperation in refraining from spreading unauthenticated news of the incident to respect the privacy of the student and the family.
