Bandar Seri Begawan - The Royal Brunei Force (RBPF) with the cooperation of other security agencies including the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Customs and Excise Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Internal Security Department, Medical Services Department and Brunei Research Department yesterday held an integrated exercise in the heart of the capital.

The exercise covered Jalan Sultan, Jalan Stoney, Jalan Pemancha, Jalan McArthur, Jalan Elizabeth II, Jalan Pretty, Jalan Sumbiling and the surrounding areas.

Some traffic congestion was reported as certain routes were cordoned off, while thick crowds of bystanders hung around to satiate their curiosity.

One of the 'affected' areas was a bus stop outside the Syariah Court building, where a "suspicious-looking bag had been left unattended". Members of the public were swiftly evacuated and soon a Special Response Team from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit arrived to inspect the bag.

Scenarios like these, which typically involve terrorist groups and other big-time criminals, are often experienced overseas.

Meanwhile, a simulated riot played out near the Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Police officers were tasked with keeping the crowd from entering the premises.

The exercise, which was led by the Royal Brunei Police Force, was designed to test their capability in handling a national security threat.
