Bandar Seri Begawan - A case of "bad romance" surfaced in court where a 27-year-old local man pleaded guilty to uploading a revealing photo of his ex-girlfriend on the social networking website Facebook after she broke up with him.
Muhammad Syakirin bin Haji Hamdani, unemployed, admitted before Senior Magistrate Pg Masni Pg Hj Bahar in court that he uploaded the photo of his ex-girlfriend wearing a corset to "teach her a lesson" for ending their relationship.
The defendant faced two charges which are 'intent to insult the modesty of the victim' and 'having publicly exhibited or in any manner put into circulation obscene articles'.
The court heard that the victim had found out about her revealing photo posted on Facebook from her niece and had lodged a police report immediately on September 6, 2012. It led to the defendant's arrest.
The couple had started a relationship sometime in May 2012, and between then and July 2012, the victim had sent a photo of herself wearing a corset to the defendant through 'Whatsapp' message.
It had been only meant for the defendant. Not too long afterwards, the victim had decided to end their relationship and the defendant had been reluctant about it.
He had threatened to send the photo to the victim's family, shops and also to post it on Facebook. The relationship had broken down when the victim refrained from responding to messages of the defendant since September 5, 2012.
This is the second case this year where men uploaded obscene photos and videos of their ex-girlfriends on the social networking website.
The first was reported in March this year and the defendant was jailed for 10 months. DPP Dk Didi Pg Latiff prosecuted the case.--Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
