Get Ready For National Youth Day Run 2012

Bandar Seri Begawan - The National Youth Day Run is back again and this year organisers are giving away cash prizes to winners in addition to other fabulous lucky draw prizes awaiting lucky participants.

Organised by the Department of Youth and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the National Youth Day Run will both begin and end at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium on October 21.

Details of the run were revealed by Deputy Director of Youth and Sports, Hj Mohd Zainri bin Dato Paduka Hj Hamdani during yesterday's press conference, in which he said, "The National Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 1, but this year the celebration was postponed as the event coincided with the holy month of Ramadhan."

As a result, "This year's National Youth Day celebration will fall on October 6 and The National Youth Day Run is being held as a side event for the celebration".

The aim of the long-distance run, "Is to promote a healthy lifestyle among the youth through exercise, to gather all the youth to celebrate Youth Day, and to foster stronger ties and interaction between the youth of the country".

This year's run has been divided into five categories - 10km for men between the age of 19 and 40 years old; 10km for women between the age of 19 and 40 years old; 5km for men between the age of 15 and 18; 5km for women between the age of 15 and 18 years old; and a 2.5km Fun Run for people with special needs.

The 2.5km Fun Run has been sub-divided into smaller categories based on the nature of an individual's impairment such as visually impaired, wheelchair, men with hearing or intellectual disabilities as well as women with hearing or intellectual disabilities.

Participants must be in possession of a valid Brunei an Identification Card of any colour and are fit to run, while participants in the 15 to 18 years of age category must obtain consent from their parents.

Registration forms are available at the Youth and Sports Department located on the sixth floor of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for the Brunei-Muara District; Mumong Sports Complex for the Kuala Belait District; the Tutong Sports Complex for the Tutong District; and the Youth Centre of Temburong for the Temburong District.

The closing date for registration is 4pm on October 10 and participants will be charged a fee of BSIO per person. A T-shirt and bib number will be provided to all participants and can be collected at the Indoor stadium between October 17 and 19.

Cash prizes for both the male and female 10km categories are B$1,200 for first place, B$900 for second place, B$700 for third place, B$500 for fourth place and B$300 for fifth place.

Cash prizes for the male and female categories of the 5km run are B$500 for first place, B$400 for second place, B$300 for third place, B$200 for fourth place and B$100 for fifth place.

Cash prizes across all the sub-categories for the 2.5km Fun Run will see first place winners receive B$150, while second and third place winners will receive B$125 and B$100 respectively.

Participants are also entitled to join in the lucky draw where 30 prizes such as a Philips 42' smart LED TV (Full HD), Macbook Pro 13', iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy, Laptop Acer Aspire El, Philips 32' LED TV (Full HD), Nokia X7, Sony Cybershot camera and more - await lucky winners.

The Deputy Director of Youth and Sports also highlighted, "We need volunteers to provide assistance for the event, therefore we also call on Non-Governmental Organisations and non-participating members of the public to help make the event a success".

He also pointed out that the department will be working closely with the Royal Brunei Police Force to control traffic flow and ensure participants are safe for the duration of the event, which saw over 2,000 people participate in 2011.
