Bandar Seri Begawan - A former Berakas High School teacher was convicted yesterday on four charges of cheating a DST officer of $60,560 worth of Easi phone cards in 2007 and was sentenced to jail and ordered to provide compensation.

A Philippine national, Christina Frontula Halum Kamilah Mari'yah Abdul Rahman, was sentenced to jail for 16 months and ordered to compensate the $60,560 or in default of the compensation serve an additional 18 months behind bars.

Christina @ Kamilah committed the offence between October 30 and November 2, 2007.

The defendant deceived the DST officer into believing that the defendant would be able to purchase $10 Easi phone cards in bulk at a discounted price.

Senior Magistrate Haji Nabil Daraina PD Ustaz Hj Badaruddin on sentencing the defendant stated that mitigations over the defendant's family hardship cannot be reflected upon as the offence was based entirely on the defendant's own wrongdoing.
