Bandar Seri Begawan - The Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Department yesterday imposed a fine of B$200 on a company for littering in a public area at the busy commercial area of Gadong.

The rubbish was found in the vicinity of the company's premises.

Anyone found littering will be fined under Chapter 30 of the Minor Offences Act which states that anyone, including companies, caught disposing of rubbish in a public place will be issued a compound fine of not more than B$500.

If the compound fine is not settled the matter will be referred to the courts and a B$1,000 fine will be levied for first-time offenders. Subsequent offenders, if found guilty may be slapped with a B$3,000 fine and be jailed for up to three months.

In a separate case, a "bubble tea" shop was ordered to shut temporarily for failing the hygiene standards.
