Belait District Marks World GIS Day

Kuala Belait - The Belait Survey Department held a one-day World GIS Day Roadshow at the lobby of government buildings in the Belait District yesterday.

According to one of the officers, the roadshow was aimed at spreading awareness on World Geographical Information System (GIS) amongst students in the district.

The purpose of the World GIS Day is to develop understanding on how GIS technology and Geography can change the current human way of life, to spread the usage of GIS to students government agencies and the public and share information on the benefits of GIS with its users and promote awareness on the importance of Geography.

The World GIS Day is a world geography awareness week celebrated on the third week of November. GIS technology is used around the world to assist in planning and administration of information that relates to property, surveying, agriculture, environment and transport among others. Accumulation of information also includes information attained from water, air and space.

The Geographic Information System (GIS) does not only relate to data or information but also refers to integrating equipments, software and reference data in terms of geography. The roadshow was open from 9am to 12 noon and from 2pm to 4pm yesterday.
