An Amsterdam budget hotel is playing on its basic facilities by advertising itself as one of the worst in the world.
The Hans Brinker Budget Hostel says it "has been proudly disappointing travellers for forty years".
"Boasting levels of comfort comparable to a minimum-security prison, the Hans Brinker also offers some plumbing and an intermittently open canteen serving a wide range of dishes based on runny eggs," it adds.
Among the facilities proudly advertised on its website are "thin mattresses, grotty paintwork, metal lockers, doors that lock and rooms without views".
While other hotel chains claim that "luxury comes as standard", the Hans Brinker excitedly tells customers: "Now with beds in every room."
"The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel isn't just a cheap youth hostel in Amsterdam," it boasts. "It's a cheap, dirty, cold, poorly lit youth hostel in Amsterdam."
A lengthy disclaimer reads: "Those wishing to stay do so at their own risk and will not hold the hotel liable for food poisoning, mental breakdowns, terminal illness, lost limbs, radiation poisoning, certain diseases associated with the 18th century, plague etc."
But the unusual advertising style seems to be working with the backpackers who make up the majority of the hostel's clientele.
"They love our humour and sarcasm and they have diminished their expectations to less than nothing," said manager Tijmen Receveur.
