October 13, 1992 - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam sealed his genuine love and care for his 'rakyat' by awarding the nation with a foundation, which will be the centre of philanthropy in the country.

The benevolent ruler awarded the Silver Jubilee's gift of love to the people yesterday at a historic function held at the reclaimed site of Kampong Sultan Lama. It was held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebration.

The foundation known as 'Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah' will be the receptacle of charitable endowment from the royal family for the benefit of the 'rakyat'.

This will symbolise the gratitude towards Allah the Almighty for His blessing during the past 25 years of His Majesty's rule. The foundation will be for the benefit of the 'rakyat' and people of Brunei, His Majesty said in his titah yesterday.

The monarch added that it will incorporate the charitable endowment or 'derma khairat' from His Majesty and the royal family.

The foundation will provide donations for the benefit of religious affairs, for welfare and education, as well as donations in various other areas. - Malai Hassan Othman
