BSP's ‘Localisation' Policy Lauded

Bandar Seri Begawan - Over 5,568 local jobseekers were registered at the Labour Department as of April this year. This statistics has shown the tight competition in the job market in Brunei. Efforts are needed to foster interest and prepare the unemployed to work in the private sector.

This observation was made by Hajah Rosliah binti Haji Hasbollah, Commissioner of Labour, at the annual BSP/BLNG/ BSM Career Exhibition and Scholarship Talk launched at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong yesterday morning.

The Commissioner of Labour lauded the `localisation' programme introduced by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), which proves that locals are just as able as foreign workers.

The career exhibition is part of a continuous endeavour by BSP and other Brunei Shell joint ventures to promote employment opportunities for locals.

Also in attendance was Haji Zainal Abidin Haji Mohd Ali, Deputy Managing Director of BSP, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, senior officers and officers from BSP, BLNG and BSM.

In his welcoming remarks, the Deputy Managing Director said that the strong `Bruneianisation' policy has already created a wealth of opportunities for Bruneians to progress and move up the corporate ladder within the company. He further expressed the company's solid commitment and continous effort to promote the policy.

He went on to say, "Providing extensive training to enhance career development has been pivotal to BSP's human resource development, particularly to meet the ever-growing challenges in the oil and gas industry."

Haji Zainal added that this is in line with the nation's Vision 2035 to develop Brunei's human resource capabilities and have its citizens be among the most well-educated and highly skilled.

He concluded his speech by saying, "Even as trainees, they will be considered to be an, important part of BSP in moving the company forward as the backbone of Brunei's economic engine."

The two-day event aims to provide local students with the opportunity to interact with BSP, BLNG and BSM personnel. At the same time, they are able to obtain relevant information on the options in applying for scholarships to further their studies or undertake the apprentice scheme under the technical and operational programme.

Interested graduates and students also have the opportunity to ask in-depth questions on the BSP scheme and other technical and operational schemes offered by the companies.

A total of 146 graduates have been hired by BSP since 2006 with a further 76 BSP scholarship recipients in the oil and gas sector. In 2009 alone, 51 graduates including 26 BSP scholarship recipients had started their employment with the company.

Members of the public are invited to visit the career exhibition that ends today at 5pm. Scholarship and career talks will also be held for those who are interested to learn more. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
