Bandar SeriBegawan - Universiti Brunei Darussalam research activities are in progress and Bruneian scientists researchers and students are invited to get involved.
"They can be collaborators, assistants or research scientists," said UBD chemistry programme leader and lecturer Dr Jose H Santos.
"Research activities on the use of local plant materials for heavy metal analysis in water are progressing," he said. His Majesty through the Ministry of Development funds it.
"The main focus of my research at UBD is on the development of analytical methods that are low cost and environmentally friendly.
"We have recently published our papers in science journals," said Dr Santos, a chartered scientist of the Science Council and a chartered chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry, both in the United Kingdom. He has been in Brunei since 2004.
"We have presented our findings to international conferences, but never in Brunei. Sean Ward, my former research assistant, had been to conferences in Malaysia and Indonesia. I gave my presentations in Australia, Philippines and the Czech Republic.
"Some of the meetings we have attended were the Meeting in Chemistry and Life (Czech Republic), International Conference for Young Chemists (Malaysia) and International Seminar on Chemistry (Indonesia).
"Our other research projects at UBD include digital photography as a toll in analytic chemistry. We have presented our results in the 11th Asian Chemistry Congress held in Shanghai, China last Sept 2009.
"Aquatic environmental chemistry. We are assessing the water quality in Brunei River and its impact on tourism and quality of life in Kampong Ayer. The on-going project involves a Bruneian collaborator and a Bruneian research assistant.
"Electroanalytical chemistry. We are using voltametric approach to the measurement of biologically important molecules such as antioxidants in foods. The project is still ongoing and involves a Bruneian collaborator," said Dr Santos.
"My former Bruneian research assistants were Mazmah A Morshidi and Li Ling Chaw, who had since found government jobs. Interested collaborators, research assistants or research students can email CLOAKING ," he said. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
