Bandar Seri Begawan - The 10th "Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya" workshop or also known as Peer Group Helpers was officially opened yesterday at the Institute of Medical and Health Science, UBD.
Present to officiate the ceremony was the Dean of Students, Students Affair Section, UBD Dk Nurolaini Pg Hj Md Kefii. In her opening speech, the guest of honour said that in the challenging modern world where parents are tied up with work, it has led to children given less attention, making friends an important role in a youth's live.
The dean also called on for participants to focus and take the opportunity to gain knowledge from the exposure of the workshop. The two-day workshop, is being facilitated by the Counselling and Student Carreer Affairs with the cooperation of the Student Representative Council 2009/2010.
The event will see basic counselling topics through talks, discussion sessions and practical activities facilitate by Dr Ee Ah Meng and Hjh Suhaina Hj Mat Ludin. Yesterday's event saw Dr Ee Ah Meng conducting a demonstration as well as elaborating his explanation with a video counselling session.
Following the video presentation, participants were divided into groups of three to carry out a role-play exercise where feedbacks were to be given to each participant to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses. These practical sessions were carried out to instil confidence in the participants.
According to Dr Ee, Peer Group Helpers can be a platform where undergraduates can share their pent-up feelings with someone, when they feel reluctant to share certain types of problems with parents or university counsellors.
Therefore, the aim of conducting the workshop is to help the participants overcome their problems of various natures that may arise from time to time. Aiman, one of the course participants said he enjoyed the course and found it very interesting and applicable.
Meanwhile, Hjh Suhaina Hj Mat Ludin and Mr Chandraseagran Suppiah, senior lecturers of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, delved on skills such as active listening, giving non-verbal and verbal responses and characteristics of effective Peer Group Helpers. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
