Bandar Seri Begawan - The East Asia Regional Media Programme, which began on March 9 concluded with a field trip to Darunnajah Islamic boarding school in Jakarta on March 11.
Some 35 participants from Asean, Asia, Japan and Korea along with live other participants from the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta joined the field trip. Upon arrival at the Pesantren, the delegates were welcomed by Drs K I I Mahrus Amin, one of the founders of Darunnajah Pesantren, who delivered a briefing on the background and development of Darunnajah Pesantren.
Darunnajah was pioneered in 1942 and was officially set up in 1974 by KH Abdul Manaf Mukhayyar, Drs KH Mahrus Amin and Drs Kamaruzzaman. Pesantren Darunnajah is a typical traditional Indonesian Islamic education institution. History has witnessed the important role of Pesantren to the development of the country.
Today, people still see the important role of Pesantren as a reservoir of science and knowledge. More than 2,500 students are studying at Pesantren and some of the core subjects include Islamic Philosophy, Aqidah Akhlak, Fiqh Islam, cultural history, Arabic language and extra-curricular activities, which comprise student organisation and leadership training, entrepreneurship and cooperatives, da'wah training and community development, media and martial arts.
In an interview with the Bulletin, Siti Kholilah, one of the teachers said that she was very happy to receive visitors from the East Regional Media Programme. The Pesantren or Islamic Boarding School is already 35 years old and almost every year the institution receives more than two thousand applications.
The institution, however, could only accommodate not more than a thousand. The study trip provided the participants with opportunities to witness first hand the roles and functions of the Islamic Boarding School.
