Bandar Seri Begawan - For the sake of nature preservation and animal conservation, transboundary collaboration should be included as one of the central features of the `Heart of Borneo' initiative.
Because conservation is at the heart of sustainable tourism planning, wildlife corridors between borders must be tackled. This is because animals do not see borders.
It is for this reason that transboundary collaboration is paramount to Borneo.
These observations were made by Hitesh Mehta, during a presentation, in which the renowned eco-tourism expert highlighted that the area of highest concentration of orang-utans was not located in the protected areas.
He cited an example in Kenya, where an elephant that researchers had been closely monitoring for the past 25 years was hunted down when it crossed into Tanzania.
While it may be illegal to hunt in Kenya, it was not the case in Tanzania.
As a result of this, 25 years of research was gone, Mehta said, adding that this shows that transboundary collaboration is needed for conservation to work.In another example, he said that one of the Y2Y initiatives between US and Canada was to connect national parks.
The idea was to establish a wildlife corridor between these protected areas because science has proven that a single wolf has a territory of hundreds of thousands of square kilometres. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
