Bandar Seri Begawan - A couple were each fined $1,200 or one-month imprisonment in default after pleading guilty to misappropriating a mobile phone owned by a friend by selling it to get money before the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Noorrafeah binti Awg Alias, 19, and Mohammad Azmi bin Latif, 21, who have no previous convictions, were given a grace period until January 12 next year to pay the fine.

The court heard that the defendants who are unemployed went to see the owner of the mobile phone (complainant) in the vicinity of the Anggerek Desa swimming pool car park using a car on December 13 this year.

When the defendants met the complainant, Noorrafeah told her that she wanted to borrow her handphone. The complainant lent it to her and left both the defendants at the car park area as she needed to report to her workplace nearby.

As soon as the complainant left, the defendants left the area with the handphone and drove to Jalan Bata Satu where they sold the handphone to a shop for $110.

Prosecuting Officer Ratno Eddy Sophian Hj Zaidi said the handphone was recovered and the couple admitted to the wrongdoings and told the police they took the handphone because they needed money.

Investigation however revealed that the proceeds of the sale were used to buy petrol, clothes and food.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
