Bandar Seri Begawan - A Part-Time maid was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to stealing money amounting to $7,000 from ATM machines by using her employer's ATM card before the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday.
"She had totally abused the trust given by the employer. Although you had said that the reason why you stole the money is due to the difficulties you had and need it for your family back in the Philippines, this is not an excuse why you had committed the offence," said the presiding magistrate yesterday before passing the sentence.
The defendant, Real Marites Cantorna, 37, who works every Tuesday and Saturday morning for two to three hours per-day, admitted to stealing the money on three different occasions, first $3,000 at Soon Lee Mentiri HSBC ATM machine, $2,000 at BSB HSBC ATM and another $2,000 at the International Airport HSBC ATM on November 5, 6 and 7 respectively.
The court was told that she used the money- to purchase personal items such as two blouses that cost $96, a mobile phone that cost $600, an airline ticket that cost $714, a TV that cost $320, a DVD player that cost $100 and several food items.
According to the Prosecuting Officer Ratno Eddy Sophian Hj Zaidi, the rest of the stolen money was never recovered.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
