Ripas Hospital's Oncology Unit Relocates To JPMC
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Hospital's Oncology (Cancer) Unit is now located permanently at the Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC).
The relocation, which started yesterday, was seen as an effort by the Ministry of Health to provide more comprehensive health services for the convenience of both their patients and the public.
According to a press release by the ministry, the main objective of the move was to set up a one-stop comprehensive "National Cancer Centre" that will cater to the care, treatment and prevention of cancer in Brunei Darussalam, in addition to helping to improve the quality of life of those diagnosed with cancer.
"This is the first phase of relocation where the entire outpatient clinical services and chemotherapy services will be moved to JPMC," said the ministry. The statement also pointed out that, at present, as many as 2,000 patients currently require chemotherapy treatment.
"With this relocation, these patients will be able to receive their treatments and services in a larger and more spacious (facility) that is also more comfortable and peaceful ... which is fitting for cancer patients when undergoing treatment," said the ministry.
The statement added that the Oncology Unit plans to expand its cancer treatment services to include "radiotherapy' and "nuclear medicine" as well as palliative care, all of which were previously unavailable in Brunei.
Palliative care is care that may be provided at any time during a person's illness from the time of diagnosis to curative treatment. Cancer patients requiring ward services however, will still be admitted into Ripas Hospital until special modifications to JPMC's wards are completed by early next year.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
