Jobless Man Jailed Eight Months For Theft
Bandar Seri Begawan - A Bruneian man was sentenced to eight months jail by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday for stealing household goods worth $41.70 from a shop in Kampong Kiarong recently.
The defendant, Hj Jafri Hj Mohamad, an unemployed 38-year-old, committed the offence that was punishable under Section 379 of the Penal Code for the theft of several sizes of Freshware plastic basins.
The prosecution told the court that Hj Jafri on December 17, 2009 about 12.30pm had gone to Syarikat I-Mart, a shop at Bangunan Hj Majid Mohammad in Kampong Kiarong with the intention of stealing.
In the statement of facts read to the court, the defendant at the time of the offence had seen that no salesperson attending to the items outside the shop and proceeded to steal 13 plastic basins (including two big and 11 small plastic basins) and then quickly boarded a bus near the shop.
The statement further said that the defendant had sold all the items that he stole to a stall vendor located at the bus station of the multistorey car park in the capital and earned $35.
On the same day at about 2.30pm, personnel of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Royal Brunei Police Force, in a routine patrol had observed the defendant who was acting suspiciously at Tamu Kianggeh.
Hj Jafri was then arrested and brought to the police station in the capital for further investigation.
The court was told that upon questioning by the authorities, the defendant had admitted to committing the theft at a shop in Kampong Kiarong and selling the stolen goods.
The court was also told that the stolen goods had been recovered by the authorities.
In his plea for mitigation Hj Jafri told the court that he needed the money to pay for the processing of his identity card.
"I take note of your guilty plea and also of your two previous convictions, also for theft. 1 was informed of your release from Jerudong Prison on January 17, 2009. Clearly you have not learned your lesson," said the Magistrate.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
