Kuala Belait - A Total of 77 children with autism were awarded with ribbons yesterday in recognition of their special abilities throughout their studies at the centre this year.

On hand to present the award during the 2009 Year End Celebration held at the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Centre in Sengkurong was Smarter President Malai Hj Abdullah Hj Malai Othman.

Recipients of the awards were children from all Smarter's three centres and facilities namely ASD Centres in Sengkurong, Kuala Belait and the Brunei Autism Centre for Adults (BACA).The recipients included those who have excelled in their academic pursuit as well as in other areas of the child's development such as in following instructions, ability in adapting to change, swimming and language.

Another award was also given for the most improved students which focuses their ability to do well on Independent Living Skills, Early Intervention Class and their transition from Pre-BACA.

Children with autism suffer from a delayed developmental process which is a life-long affliction that prevents the individual from understanding what they see, hear and sense resulting in challenges in social, training, education and psychology. Among the signs and symptoms of autism involve in fleeting eye contact, limited attention span, delayed communications and use of language, malfunction of sensory processes resulting in high threshold pain among others.

The event began with song and dance performances by Smarter children who sang songs like "It's a Small World", "Heal the World", "High Five Song" and concluded with "Imagine".

Set up in September 2001, Smarter Brunei is a family support group which is run by parents and family members. They are also a member of World Autism Organisation.
