Fire & Rescue Personnel Cleaning Up The White Substance
That Was Found Along Hassanal Bolkiah Highway
Bandar Seri Begawan - Firefighters were called in to clear a chemical spillage after calcium carbonate from three damaged drums were found scattered around a section of the Hassanal Bolkiah Highway yesterday afternoon.
Each barrel was filled with 50 kilogrammes of calcium carbonate, which is a chemical compound that is commonly used in medicine.
Short-term exposure to the chemical could lead to eye irritation and affect one's respiratory tract. Following a distress call at around 3.40pm, Fire & Rescue personnel and two fire-engines from the Berakas Fire Station called to the scene, where two more drums were found in good condition.
After the `HAZMAT' team had confirmed that the white substance on the highway was non-lethal, seven firefighters proceeded with the clean-up operation, which was spearheaded by Assistant Superintendent Hj Kassim bin Hj Omar.
It took them about half an hour to remove the chemical. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
