Bandar Seri Begawan - In Realising the important role that the media play in today's society and to extend its appreciation for 17 years of coverage on its activities and projects, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (Yayasan) held a media appreciation ceremony at the Yayasan Complex in the capital yesterday.

The ceremony also took place in conjunction with the launching of Yayasan's new official website which was officiated by the guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awg Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Chairman of Yayasan's Board of Directors.

Dato Paduka Awg Hj Ali Hashim bin Hj Daud, Managing Director of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, said it is undeniable that the media in the modern age, is not only seen as information providers but also as the community's voice.

"The media has been labelled as a form of agent for the ever-changing community in which its influence outweighs any other voices. The clarification of issues and accurate, truthful and responsible news are important in this process," he added.

In realising the tremendous influence the media plays in our lives, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, as a social institution involved directly in assisting and providing services to the community, realises the need for cooperation, better communication and to make strategic associations with the media from all sides - government and private.

Dato Hj Ali Hashim clarified that Yayasan's website has existed for some time and the launch was in fact a reconstructed new official website having more information and a number of new web pages.

He said he hopes that the community would understand more about Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah through the information provided in the website, adding that, "Yayasan is also ready to receive ideas and views from the public to upgrade its services".

Pehin Dato Hj Abu Bakar presented certificates of appreciation to representatives from Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB), Information Department, Borneo Bulletin, Media Permata, The Brunei Times, United Daily News, See Hua Daily News, Sin Chew Jit Poh and a number of active bloggers.

Yayasan's new official website, yshhb.org.bn. has added new webpages such as the photo gallery, e-magazine, e-application form and online application for questionnaires to ease two-way communication between Yayasan and the public.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
