Bandar Seri Begawan - A ceremony to mark the donation of teaching equipment for Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering's (MKJB) plant engineering section from BSP as well as a certificate presentation for teachers who had undergone the Skills Development Programme and CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector - Level 1 Course was held yesterday.

The event's chief guest who witnessed the presentations was the Acting Director of Technical Education, Pg Suhaimi Pg Hj Bakar.

In his welcoming address, MKJB's Acting Principal Cikgu Alias Hj Abu Bakar said that in line with strategic plans of the Ministry of Education and Technical Education to strengthen the level of partnership with the community and industry, MKJB is continuously taking initiatives towards fostering and developing relations with various industries, including quality training agencies, locally and overseas.

MKJB's relations with Brunei Asia-Pacific Shell Learning Hub have existed since 1980, whereby MKJB has trained Brunei Shell staffthrough the college's BTEC course in the Operation Technical Training Scheme and also relevant engineering fields, such as Plant Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, as well as Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The Skills Development. Programme is aimed at exposing teachers to skills, equipment and technology, as well as the practices of safety and health in the industry.

It is coordinated by MKJB and conducted at the Brunei Asia Pacific Shell Learning Hub since 2006 for new teachers and serves as an induction programme during the semester break. Presently, 32 teachers have benefited from the programme. Yesterday, teachers received certificates for completing the Skills Development Programme Dec 2008 / June 2009.
In his speech, the acting principal also advised teachers to constantly equip themselves with the necessary knowledge and boost their skills to be relevant with the current employment demand, as well as to further boost their career developments.

Last year, Brunei Asia Pacific Shell Learning Hub had contributed two teaching equipment and also seven additional equipment early this year. Yesterday, three teaching equipment were presented for the use of students in the National Diploma Plant Engineering course as well as MKJB students in general.

He expressed hope that such programmes and learning equipment will successfully expose teachers to various modern teaching techniques, as well as to further open up their minds, in an effort to develop the youths towards academic excellence and quality workforce.

Two officers and teachers will also receive their certificates for completing the CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector Level 1 Course in Selangor, Malaysia, in mid-December. The training is designed to boost the abilities and skills of officials and teachers, to identify various visual inspections in the field of Welding and Fabrication.

Meanwhile, Jim Carthy, Head of Learning and Development (HLD) stated that BSP has helped in the development of many locals, while partnerships between BSP HLD and MKJB represent one of the mutually beneficial relationships in place for many years.

"BSP HLD has supported the development of local Bruneian community by way of advice, teaching staff familiarisation visits and also the donation of equipment to enhance the learning process."

On the other hand, MKJB has developed young Bruneian talents who are able to apply to BSP for key jobs that play a part in securing the future of the Sultanate's oil and gas industry. Yesterday's donation, the continuation of a programme that started in 2007, is that of practical learning's support equipment, which has a direct relevance to BSP's business needs.

The mechanical equipment follows in the footprints of previous Electrical and Instrumentation equipment, representing a financial commitment from BSP of some $150, 0000 noted Mr Carthy. In addition to the physical equipment, HLD Learning Advisors helped in the set-up and will continue to lend support to enable the smooth running of the equipment in the future.

The event also witnessed presentation of certificates to teachers who took part in the Skills Development Programme course at Brunei Asia Pacific Shell Learning Hub as well as teachers who have undergone the CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector Level 1 Course. The event ended with a visit to the college's plant engineering workshop. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
