Temburong Dialogue Reaches Grassroots
Bangar - Grassroot leaders yesterday were urged to increase their knowledge, especially in areas of information and communication technology (ICT), as they will be the main movers of the e-Kampung (e-Village) system which is scheduled to be implemented soon.
Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan BPSK Dato Seri Setia Hj Md Yusof said this yesterday, stating that this is in line with the ministry's long-term strategic plan of "increasing human resource capability".
He added that the ministry's move towards educating its human resources, including grassroot leaders, is part of its effort towards driving the ministry's future e-government project.
This was among the many issues raised by Pehin Dato Hj Adanan at the second session of the dialogue meeting with subdistrict heads, village heads and longhouse chiefs in Temburong yesterday. The session also gathered members of the State Legislative Councils and senior officers from the ministry.
"We have to think about what contribution grassroot leaders can give and need to think of more effective procedures in activating the role of mukim and village consultative councils," the minister said.
Pehin Dato Hj Adanan also urged the leaders to actively participate in agriculture and agrifood, not only for self-sustenance but to venture into large scale commercial agricul ture.
The minister further lauded Temburong for its success in ensuring that all its 17 village consultative councils are working on their own products under the One Village, One Product project under the ministry.
"With hard work and commitment, mukim and village consultative councils can continue to reap success and produce products that are ideal, high quality and competitive as well as give more value to the income and increase standard of living in a bid to break the circle of poverty," he said.
Grassroot leaders were also reminded to uphold the trust and responsibilities entrusted to them according to the 1998 Penghulu and Head Village Service Scheme.
The minister and delegation also visited several villages in Temburong District, including Kg Belingus, Kg Belais, Kg Buda-Buda and Kg Puni where the delegation had the opportunity to see for themselves the development of local products in these villages. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
