BSP Holds Familiarization Programme For Dignitaries
Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) yesterday held a familiarisation programme for dignitaries to Brunei Darussalam and representatives from various private sectors. The dignitaries comprised over 40 High Commissioners, Ambassadors, and CEOs from banks, transportation, armed forces and media, according to a press release.
Commenting on the visit, BSP Managing Director, Dr Grahaeme Henderson said, "It was an honour to welcome such a high profile delegation to BSP. We were privileged to be able to spend an entire day with these very busy officials, allowing us to show a few aspects of our world class operation."
The delegates were briefed on oil and gas, starting with a presentation on the formation of hydrocarbons many millions of years ago, and then the finding and development of the on and offshore fields in Brunei.
The visitors examined rock samples and oil saturated sandstones. BSP's commitment to the environment, `Bruneianisation' and local business development were also presented. This interactive session led to many questions from the dignitaries, bringing into debate the current global issues.
The delegation visited the BSP Head Office in Seria where they were able to view first hand world-leading technologies and spoke to global experts. On focus was the East Collaborative Work Environment that allows seamless virtual integration between offshore platforms and onshore support teams, enabling better pursuit of production opportunities now and in the future. BSP also demonstrated the application of its world-leading Smart Field technology and snake wells.
The 3D visualisation centre, Wawasan, shows the subsurface geology in three dimensions, allowing oil and gas bearing sands to be identified assisting in targeting drilling opportunities.
The Coordination Control Centre brings together the entire field operation from onshore and offshore wells through to tanker loadings. It also included the Emergency Control Centre.
The group visited the Marine Construction Yard in Kuala Belait and was briefed on and saw the massive Champion Living Quarters Jacket. They then headed onto the onshore T201 drilling rig which is drilling fishhook wells over 4km under the sea to produce oil from the extension of the Seria Field. The visitors were able to witness well drilling, and saw hot mud and cuttings from below the ground. The T201 rig was recently awarded the prestigious Shell "Rig of the Year" amongst 85 land rigs worldwide that are contracted to Shell, for its safety and overall operational performance.
The visitors went to Seria Crude Oil Terminal for a briefing and tour of the Control Room and SCOT area. The dignitaries stood alongside the large storage tanks and were briefed on how crude oil carriers are loaded using the offshore floating single buoy moorings. The largest tanker to visit Brunei this year was loaded with one million barrels of oil.
There was a briefing on the Brunei Tell-A-Friend Road Safety campaign. The dignitaries signed up to become members and promote the message to wear seatbelts, not exceed the speed limit and not to use mobile phones while Driving US Ambassador, William E Todd remarked on his tour of the facilities, "It's very enlightening, it's really interesting to see the long partnership between Shell and the Brunei government. I learned a lot about the technology like the SMART wells and snake-wells and, especially the environmental work Shell has done."
The British High Commissioner, Rob Fenn said "I already knew Brunei Shell Petroleum was a class act. But today's glimpse 'behind-the-scenes' helped me understand on what this reputation has been built: cutting-edge technology and the world's best people in the oil and gas sector."
In his capacity as the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, and on behalf of members of the diplomatic community who participated at the visit, Singapore High Commissioner to the country, Joseph Koh Kok Hong thanked Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) for giving them a first-hand view at Shell's operations in Brunei.
"We were all impressed by the 'hardware' (Shell's facilities) and 'software' (its systems and philosophy, including its culture of safety, -excellence, innovation and competitiveness). More importantly, we were impressed by Shell's 'heartware' - its corporate social responsibility, evident in its support for the 'Heart of Borneo' initiative and also its drive to inculcate a greater sense of road safety in Brunei.
We are also impressed by the sense of unity of purpose shared by management and staff of Shell: it was clear to us that they 'work with one heart'."-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
