Iqbaal Orator Champ In Religious Schools Contest

Bandar Seri Begawan - Muhammad Iqbaal Syakib bin Haji Suhib from Sekolah Arab Jerudong emerged the champion in the Oratory Contest for Religious schools, which was held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee National Day. He scored 90.5 per cent and beat seven other contestants in the finals of the competition.

He was also judged as the 'Best Orator' with his oration entitled "Pembangunan Belia Dalam Merealisasikan Negara Zikir".

Second place went to Irsalina Syakirah binti Mohd Ikbal from Sekolah Ugama Penanjong, Tutong, who scored 84 per cent with her oration " Zikir Teras Kekuatan Negara", and third place went to Mohammad Ahsanuddin bin Siman from Sekolah Ugama Pg Muda Abd Azim, Serasa Brunei II, with a score of 79 per cent for his oration entitled " Zikir Benteng Keamanan Negara".

The finals were held at the Islamic Da' wah Centre Conference Hall in Kg Pulaie and was attended by the Acting Director of Research, Development and International Affairs at Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr Awang Mataim bin Abu Bakar, who presented prizes to the winners.

In his speech, the guest of honour said that the competition acts as an alternative platform to strengthen the use of the Malay language as the official language of the nation.

He said "In this globalised world, language plays an important role in communication towards achieving the nation's goal. He hoped that the contest would motivate more students brave enough to come forward and to perform in front of an audience and to share their thoughts on patriotism, education, economy, politics, and society and so on. These are but some of the qualities expected out of the next generation that hopes to grow into a leadership role in their field."

Meanwhile, the Head of Institute Section of the Islamic Studies Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Dayang Hajah Rusita binti Haji Yahya, who is also the chairperson of the ceremony, said the aim of the competition was to foster a loving spirit towards the nation amongst students at Religious and Arabic schools in the country.

It was also to educate and to search for talented students in oration and at the same time train students in order to equip them with skills in delivering their views and suggestions in public.

The contest was organised by Islamic Studies Department in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee National Day 2009.
