Bandar Seri Begawan - As A way to promote appreciation of the arts and culture, winning students of this year's Ministry of Education (MoE) competitions performed in front of large crowds at The Mall in Gadong on Saturday evening.

MoE Co-Curriculum Department's Head of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship Md Sofri Hj Md Said said that the competition was part of their department's annual event.

"Throughout the year, the competition is ongoing throughout the country because there are many categories such as silat, singing and drama which many schools participate in," he said.

Md Said went on: "We hold these performance nights when winners are announced so that they can show their talent," he said.

Md Sofri added that it was good for the student's parents to see their children perform during the performance night, because parents usually could not attend the actual competition.

"This is a good opportunity for parents to see their children's talent. At the same time, we chose to showcase the children's talents through their performances at The Mall so that the public can also appreciate them," he said.

He added that another reason for showcasing the performances to the public is to promote these kind of activities in Brunei among the youth.

"We want to try and encourage youths nowadays not only to (partake) in activities that involve music, but other activities as well."

A total of 10 categories of arts and culture were performed by the 10 winning schools.

Present as guest of honour during the event was the ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary (Corporate Services) Hjh Norjum Hj Yusop, and other senior officials. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
