Raising Awareness Of 'Green Issues
Bandar Seri Begawan - Winners of the Ministry of Education's Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (Step) Centre's 2009 Poster competition - held to foster the love of "green" and Brunei among the Sultanate's youth - were awarded prizes at the Yayasan Shopping Complex yesterday.
The competition, Chemed "Towards A Greener Brunei", was held to raise awareness among Brunei's younger generation about various issues revolving around the preservation of nature, said Acting Head of Step Centre Hj Metali Hj Mirasan.
"This is a hot topic that is frequently discussed and has grown to become a global issue," he said, adding that it is fortunate that 70 per cent of the Sultanate's land area was still covered by natural forests.
He said that the computer software generated posters will also help develop the talents of the students, further improving their proficiency with computer use.
Meanwhile, Step Centre's Education Officer Zulbahri said that the poster competition will not only teach the participants, but also their friends and families on the importance of preserving nature.
He explained that the participants, through their research, would have gathered significant amount of information on preservation of nature. They will then share the information with their peers and family members, thereby helping to raise the community's awareness regarding the topic.
The competition was divided into three categories, Category A for primary school students from Year four, five and six, Category B for secondary and college students (Year seven to 11) and Category C for pre-university students as well as those from technical and vocational schools.
Judging criteria for the posters included the appeal and ability of the pictures and images used to raise awareness or remind the public of the competition's theme, as well as creativity and originality.
Emerging victorious for Category A was Muizatul Fitriyah Hew from Pchin Dato Jamil Primary School, while Muhd Adi Adham Ramlan from Mahad Islam Brunei and Mohd Ariffin Hj Metussin from Business School achieved top honours for Category B and Category C respectively.
"I just wanted to join since I had some basic skills in Photoshop... never thought I would actually win this," said Mohd Ariffin.
He said that he based his design and template of his poster from his vision and instinct, as well as constantly seeking advice and suggestions from his tutors.
"I had to obtain feedback from my tutors more than 10 times before settling on the final product," he said, adding that the pictures he had chosen for his poster reflected the fresh, clean and green nature of Brunei as well as the country's "reuse, reduce and recycle" policy. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
